In 4th grade, we start looking deeper into what fractions really mean. Think of a fraction not just as numbers on a page, but as parts of a whole.
🍕 The Pizza Analogy: What is a Fraction?
Imagine you have one big, delicious pizza. If you cut it into equal slices, each slice is a part of the whole pizza.
- The bottom number (called the denominator) tells us how many equal pieces the whole pizza was cut into.
- The top number (called the numerator) tells us how many of those pieces we have or are talking about.
For example, if you cut a pizza into 4 equal slices and eat 1 slice, you ate 1/4 (one-fourth) of the pizza.
- The “4” means there were 4 slices total.
- The “1” means you have 1 slice.
Remember: The pieces must be equal in size! If one piece is huge and another is tiny, we can’t use fractions to describe them fairly.
